National Book Week (NBW) will be bringing its own brand of wonder to the South African Book Fair (SABF) this year, through the NBW Magic Tent. All are invited to attend events at the tent, from smaller children to grandparents; and to revel in the affirmative power of books and reading − for the first time or the thousandth time!
As part of its mandate to develop a reading culture in South Africa, the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) promotes dedicated quality initiatives that expose children to books and their treasures in imaginative ways that also reach as many children as possible.
THE NBW MAGIC TENT IS GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL ARTS COUNCIL.
The Tent will be run by skilled service providers who have years of experience in sharing the magic of books with children, and have also developed tested and exciting ways of promoting the skills of reading
Cotlands establishes early-learning playgrounds and toy libraries for children under the age of six in under-resourced communities countrywide. Children learn best through play, and the Cotlands toy libraries are highly engaging micro environments that encourage intelligent play and learning.
The Cotlands toy libraries in the Magic Tent will allow children to play with carefully selected educational play materials, and a wide range of educational toys and resources that enhance learning for young children.
A variety of ‘reading champions’ from Project Literacy, an early-childhood-development programme, will read from books, wonderful books, to the children in the Magic Tent. Project Literacy is intent on encouraging all parents and guardians to read to children at home. They will be available to speak with caretakers who need practical and realistic tips to get started on the reading journey.
