Funda Bala is very excited to be heading up to Matjiesfontein and Laingsberg in the Western Cape from 4 to 6 September for National Book Week this year. It will meet both the Mayor and the MEC of this area at the launch event in Matjiesfontein, and will be joined by Cotlands and Wordathon, who will interact with the (mostly) farming community.
The activities in the area promise to be stimulating, with our co-hosts offering puppetry, book making and film screenings. Storytelling will be performed by the elders in the community, who will tell the tale of the flood of 1981 and how it affected their community. Rap poetry will be performed by a talented local boy and local riel dancers will perform ancient Khoi dancing and impart their skills to others in the community. Riel dancing is traditionally a storytelling dance, and is thus well suited to be represented under the theme of #OURSTORIES.
#OURSTORIES is a theme that will run from National Book Week (NBW) through to the Fair. Our intention is to turn into published books many of the stories shared during the week by communities all over South Africa.
