In 2017 the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) took over the national Book Fair from the Publishers’ Association of South Africa. The SABDC’s mandate is to grow and develop South Africa’s book industry; and to reposition the South African Book Fair (SABF), which had previously served a traditional, established market, as a Fair that is more widely accessible and is representative of South Africa as a whole.
The SABDC was proudly able to fulfil this mandate to a marked degree in its first year of running the Fair, showing how necessary the change of direction had been.
In 2018, for the second year running, the Book Fair will be hosted in the metropolitan Newtown Cultural Precinct in Johannesburg; and will again be a space for new publishers, the gamut of South African authors, and a largely black audience of established, new and potential readers.
